Ol' Groove is truly honored that you...Denis,
Ol' Groove is truly honored that you've stopped by and not only read, but added (immensly!) to my humble post. Thanks so much for sharing that behind-the-scenes story. First, both Warren and Lee approached me about assembling an alternative comix magazine for them. I interviewed with both and decided, for various reasons, to throw my lot in with Marvel, no doubt annoying Warren. The name I privately proposed, only to Stan, and which he embraced, was COMIX INTERNATIONAL (because I planned to have various Dutch and French cartoonists in the magazine). I even had COMIX INTERNATIONAL stationery printed. Jim Warren somehow got wind of the title in its early stages from a spy and acted quickly. At a key moment Jim invited Stan to lunch, and after small talk, Jim mentioned that he was publishing a magazine called COMIX INTERNATIONAL. Stan bristled, saying, "Oh no --- WE'RE doing a title by that name!" Warren then smiled and pulled from his valise an advance copy of his first issue, hot off the press, and plopped it in front of Stan. "Too LATE!" he crowed.

My magazine then became COMIX BOOK, a title neither Stan nor I exactly loved, and, ironically enough, it also lasted 5 issues, the same as COMIX INTERNATIONAL.
---Denis KitchenDenis Kitchenhttp://www.deniskitchen.comnoreply@blogger.com
