Groove's Faves: "A Child Shall Leave You" by Conway, Newton, and Adkins

Classic creators Gerry Conway, Don Newton, and Dan Adkins continue their revival of Jack Kirby's Fourth World with "A Child Shall Leave You" in Return of The New Gods #14 (July 1977). That Orion splash page, alone, was worth the thirty-five cent price of admission as far as Teen Groove was concerned. Now I know it was worth a lot more than that!

Groove's Faves: "Let Loose the Hounds of War...!" by Conway, Newton, and Adkins

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! It's been a while since we dug on Gerry Conway and Don Newton's Return of the New Gods (a not-bad-at-all series, sadly forgotten by most--read more about it here), so Ol' Groove thought it was high-time we took a look at Conway and Newton's (along with inker Dan Adkins) swingin' second ish--which is, naturally, numbered 13 (May 1977). Newton's art is about as un-Jack Kirby-like as you can get, but doggoned if he didn't have his own, unique way of presenting the power and majesty of New Genesis...and the darkness and depravity of Apokolips! Check out..."Let Loose the Hounds of War...!"

Groovy Age Gold: "The Lady and the Tiger" by Simon and Kirby

Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Here's another magnificent Golden Age Manhunter saga from Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. This particular tale was originally told in Adventure Comics #78 (September 1942) and was reprinted in New Gods #9 (April 1972). Notice how S&K rarely showed Manhunter's face in this story--and when they did, his mask kept changing! O Editor, Where Art Thou?

Groovy Age Gold: "Beware of Mr. Meek!" by Simon and Kirby

What it is, Groove-ophiles! Today we're checking out the magnificence that was Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Golden Age Manhunter. "Beware of Mr. Meek" comes from the back pages of the legendary sixth issue of New Gods (October 1971) and was originally published in Adventure Comics #75 (cover-dated June 1942). This was Young Groove's first exposure to "society sportsman" Paul Kirk's alter ego, and I hope it impresses you as much as it did moi!
