Black and White Wednesday: B&W Mags You Might've Read on July 4 During the Groovy Age

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! Happy Independence Day to all my groovy guys and gals in the U.S.! And a belated Canada Day to y'all in the Great White North! Today Ol' Groove's trying something different for both 4th of July and B&W Wednesday, and that's looking back over the entirety of the Groovy Age (1968-1980) at the black and white action and horror mags you could very well have bought when you stocked up on firecrackers, sparklers, and cherry bombs, baby! You might've been reading these while waiting for the burgers and dogs to grill or on a picnic with the family! All the following covers represent b&w comic mags that came out between July 1-July 4 each year of the Groovy Age! How's that for time travel, baby! Enjoy the covers (in no particular order--hey, I'm on holiday!), but don'tcha spill any mustard on 'em!

Black and White Wednesday: "The Butchered at the Earth's Core!" by Fedory and Suso

Sometimes, Groove-ophiles, there are no words to describe the wild weirdness of the guys from Skywald. From Nightmare #14 (cover-dated August 1973) Ed Fedory and Suso give us..."The Butchered at the Earth's Core!"

Black (and White) Friday: "Hunger of the Slaughter-Sludge Beasts!" by Moench and Suso

Season's Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Here in the U.S. of A., today's the day when people shrug off their turkey-induced comas and get up in the middle of the night to battle (sometimes literally) the raging mobs in an effort to save money on Christmas gifts at overcrowded stores offering ridiculously low marked-down prices. Ol' Groove just sleeps in, but there ya go. Anywho, this phenomenon known as Black Friday allows those of us here in Groovy City an extra helping of Black and White Wednesday goodness--just on a Friday (hence our punny, parenthetical title). This year's Black (and White) Friday special is "Hunger of the Slaughter-Sludge Beasts" by Doug Moench and Jusus Suso Rego (better known as plain ol' "Suso"). This eco-terror tale was originally published in (you guessed it!) November (1973) in Psycho #16! Here's hoping those of y'all out there Black Friday shopping don't run into any psychos, yourselves!

Black and White Wednesday: The Little Horror-Mood Shop of Horrors

Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Warren mags' Captain Company wasn't the only way to order cool horror-related junk out of a black and white horror mag! Archaic Al Hewetson and company had their very own Little Horror-Mood Shop of Horrors going on in their Skywald Horror-Mood mags, as well. Just in time for your Halloween ordering pleasure (provided you have a time machine), you can check out all the spooky and slimy stuff offered in Scream #11 (cover-dated February 1975)...

Can you imagine a mailman carrying that Styrofoam boulder to the doorstep? Sheesh!

Black and White Wednesday: "Bad Choke" by Glut and Xirinius

Enter freely and of your own will, Groove-ophiles! Today we're cracking open our moldy copy of Skywald's Psycho #8 (cover-dated September 1972) to take a look at a classic short shocker by writer Don (Dr. Spektor, Dagar, Tragg) Glut and artist Jaime Juez Castella (aka Juez Xirinius). Ol' Groove loves those blackly humorous spooky stories that are built around really bad puns like..."Bad Choke!" Dig it!

And if you think they don't make 'em like this any more, check out The Creeps Magazine. Glut is writing brand new stories just like these for 'em and they're far-out!
