Marvel M-AD-ness: 13 Terrifying Teasers from Macabre Marvel

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! When the Comics Code relaxed its ban on supernatural-style stories, Mighty Marvel unleashed more monsters than Transylvania and all its neighbors! Dig this random sampling of creepy commercials for the creature features that ran in the early 1970s Marvel Mags! What a bounty of blood-curdling books, baby!

  1. It was a great time to be a Marvel monster fan. Whereas Chamber of Darkness and Tower of Shadows faded into ignominy pretty quickly, the House of Ideas bounced back with their black and whites and found their adrenaline. Tales of the Zombie and Dracula Lives were standouts, while the four-color Tomb of Dracula was one of the best things Marv Wolfman ever did. DC excelled in their horror anthologies. Marvel built their horrorverse around characters: Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, the Zombie, Werewolf by Night, Lilith, Satana. With Boris and Neal Adams covers added into the mix I eagerly plunked down my 3 quarters every other month to escape into a chamber of chills (Sorry. Couldn't resist that one).

  2. I remember seeing most of those ads back in the day. The illustrations were taken from the books themselves, as I recall. Marvel's planning on reviving Crypt of Shadows in January, if but for a short-term gimmick.
