Way back when I did my first (and only so far--but they're comin', they're comin'!) Dream Teams of the Groovy Age post, many of you had fond memories of the legendary Marvel Team-Up #79 (December, 1978), in which the dream team of Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Terry Austin, and Tom Orzechowski paired the unlikely duo of Spider-Man and Red Sonja in one of the best team-ups of all time. Well, Merry Christmas, Groove-ophiles! Just to show who loves ya, baby, Ol' Groove is presenting that extraordinary epic in its entirety right here, right now.
one of my favorite dream teams of the late groovy era is on the book ROM the SPACEKNIGHT. near the end of it's run there are five or six issues drawn by STEVE DITKO an inked by CRAIG RUSSEL. this might seem like an oddball pairing at first, but it turns out quite the opposite. the result is art that's not all the way ditko, and not all the way russell, but it's all the way AWESOME!!! for me it's the dream team that almost wasn't, because they did so little work together. oh well, them's the breaks. at least i have those issues to drool over.
ReplyDeleteThough I officially end the Groovy Age with July, 1980 (the month X-Men #137 appeared), I do believe I'm gonna have to make exceptions from time to time for groovy stuff that came out post-Groovy Age--Ditko and Russell on ROM will definitely be one of those (and there were several other cool/odd pairings of Ditko with inkers on that ROM run, too).
ReplyDeleteMy rules, so I can break/bend 'em if I like, right?
Andy, anytime you wanna do a guest post on a fave comic, or to plug FireBreather (which would definitely fit into the "Not Necessarily the Groovy Age" category I started back last summer), you're more than welcome to do so!
