Bring On the Back-ups: Captain Marvel Jr. in "The Mystery of the Missing Newsstand!"

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Just a quick post today, but a goody! Ol' Groove thinks you'll dig this beautifully-drawn back-up featuring Captain Marvel Jr. From Shazam! #9 (October 1973) here's "The Mystery of the Missing Newsstand!" by Elliot S! Maggin and Dave Cockrum.

  1. My father was a HUGE fan of Fawcett Publications. By the time I came along, he still had a nice set of Fawcett superhero and western comics from the 40s.

The odd thing about the Marvel Family of comics was that, often, the Captain Marvel JUNIOR stories were more "realistic" than the regular Captain Marvel stories. Mac Raboy was a master artist, and it was interesting to see DC try their hand at new Marvel Jr. stories in the 70s....

  2. My dad's fave comics were the Fawcett ones as well, Chris. I remember him actually being a bit excited when I told him Captain Marvel and family were coming back.

I think Dave Cockrum did a pretty good tribute to Mac Raboy here. Got the spirit of the style, that's for sure.
