Thursday Double-Play: H.P. Lovecraft in the Tower of Shadows
One of the cool things Marvel always did with their mystery/horror titles back in the Groovy Age was their adaptations of the works of classic horror writers. You can't get much more classic--or horrifying--than the macabre masterpieces of H.P. Lovecraft, dig? So, here's a twin-pack of Lovecraft's tales adapted by my fave Groovy Age writer, Roy Thomas with awe-inspiring art by Barry (Windsor-) Smith on "The Terrible Old Man!" (from Tower of Shadows #3, October 1969)...

Great to see those stories. I think that's the only issue of TOS I don't have. Tom Palmer is really a masterful storyteller - I wish he'd been able to do more pencil work throughout the 70s.
ReplyDeleteI tend to forget that Palmer could even draw. I always associate him with inking Gene Colan, and that's it. A pleasant reminder, this, that the man was actually pretty darn good in his own right. nice one, Groove.
