Science Fiction Theater: The Valley of Gwangi

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! Are you in the mood for some cowboys and dinosaurs? Today's edition of Science Fiction Theater, features Jack Sparling's adaptation of director Jim O'Connolly's classic 1969 western-fantasy The Valley of Gwangi. The movie on which the comic is based was conceived by King Kong animator Willis O'Brian and features the stop-motion wizardry of Ray Harryhausen. Sparling's adaption appeared in Dell's Movie Classics #880 (September 1969). Got your popcorn ready? Then awaaaaaaaay we gooooooo!

    You know, much as I love Ray Harryhausen, this story really makes a better comic than a film.

    What's with the numbering of these Dell Comics? Were there really 880 issues of "Movie Classics"?

      Movie Classics seems to have started with #208 (Three Stooges Meet Hercules) in 1962. Maybe it continued its numbering from Dell's Four Color Comics.

    nice find Groove! now I wish they would take all those dumb people out of the story and just make it a dinosaur blow-out! Really would like to see the artist cutting loose on the terrible lizards

    great blog. awful comic. Ray never got much good stuff from adaptions, that's for sure.
    still, I would have loved this as a kid, since I had the coloring book.
