Amazed By Aparo: "The Anguish of...The Spectre"

What it is, Groove-ophiles! Ol' Groove's back with more Jim Aparo excellence! This time it's a Spectre classic from Adventure Comics #232 (December 1973), "The Anguish of...The Spectre"! Michael Fleisher's script is exactly what you'd expect from this gritty and vengeful Spectre era, allowing Aparo to cut loose with some of the most tastefully grisly images this side of a Hitchcock flick! Dig it, baby!

  1. Oh, man, there's nothing like 20-cent comics and there's nothing like Jim Aparo's SPECTRE stories! Utterly fantastic stuff. Great post!

  2. Gotta love the Spectre by Aparo! If you haven't seen the Warner Presents DC Showcase show. Do so! You'll love it! It's only 11 mins, but excellent. It's true to the aparo version, mixed in with Ploog looking animation. A Dirty Harry like sound track & opening. Throw Christine the car, part The Shadow & part a episode of Night Gallery!

It's a shame we never got to see a issue of Brave & the Bold. Starring the Spectre & Capt.Marvel/Shazam! Or a Spectre & Phantom Stranger issue. Love to see a really spooky Spectre movie!

  3. Another fine choice. Aparo's Spectre run was just awesome.
