Tom Sutton has to rank highly in the pantheon of criminally-underrated Groovy Age artists. To prove my point, Ol' Groove is layin' 13 far-out and fear-tastic covers the talented Mr. Sutton conjured up for a variety of macabre Charlton Comics from 1972-1978.
HowOOOOOOOOOOOed you like those poison apples, Groove-ophile?
Awesome !!!

Between 1972 and 1978 I was ages 5-11, and I can honestly say that I woulda been freaked out of my mind if I'd seen any of those covers on the spinner racks. Today I've come to accept Tom Sutton's genius and even love his stuff (I wish he'd taken over Werewolf By Night after Ploog left!). Having said that, that frog cover is seriously creeping me out!!

ReplyDeleteNice selection. Even when Charlton's painted covers aren't particularly well drawn, they sure are striking!

I like! I would have to say the cover of Haunted Library #26 is my second favorite, right behind Creepy Things #1! That frog! It looks like it has a human soul trapped in it!
ReplyDeleteaw, man, that cover to Ghostly Haunts # 38! one of my favourites, and, if I remember correctly, that issue also featured one of Tom's very best Charlton jobs, too - the one about the Lovecraft-type guy who writes his horrors into existence in the real world. absolutely fantastic!
ReplyDeletegreat post, Groove! I'm lovin' it!
Charlton was an awesome company
