Black and White Wednesday: "Relic" by Toomey and Simonson

Warren's Creepy #112 (cover dated October 1979) was a great mag with over a half-dozen black and white shockers between its four-color covers. For a story to stand out in a mag filled with strips by talents like Archie Goodwin, Al Williamson, John Severin, and Alex Nino? It's gotta be something special. I think Bob Toomey and Walt Simonson's "Relic" fills the bill. What do you think, Groove-ophiles?

    Ouch...it took me several tries to parse the first two panels of the final page--very sloppy writing; I thought for sure a page was missing. It sure would have helped if there'd been some kind of transition between "weapon of defense" and "They live on a much faster time scale..." Run together like that, I thought the aliens were talking about humans living on a faster time scale, then the woman confirming that with self-deprecating remarks, and then, well, the whole thing didn't make sense...

    Nice artwork. The illustrated Alien book was my first exposure to Simonson's artwork. I must have been nine years old. His style struck me in such a new way.

    Does Walter Simonson work straight to ink? His style seems natural or sketch-ish.

    Thanks for sharing. I love the Warren mags, especially their science fiction stories. Would it be possible for you to post "Gravity Field" by Bob Toomey and Pepe Moreno Casares from Vampi# 76?
