Oh, Alfredo! "Waters of Darkness, River of Doom!" by Conway, J. Buscema, and Alcala

What it is, Groove-ophiles! For some reason, Big John Buscema was reported to have not been the biggest fan of Alfredo Alcala's inks over his pencils. Must have driven him crazy, then, that Alfredo inked so many of his tales. Proof that Ol' Groove is definitely not an artist: I think Buscema and Alcala go together like peanut butter and jelly, hot days and air conditioning, and Sonny and Cher. Big John did only the layouts, while the talented Mr. Alcala finished and inked Gerry Conway's "Waters of Darkness, River of Doom!" from Ka-Zar #6 (August 1974). Methinks it's truly a thing of savage beauty. What say you?

    I agree Groove! Buscema truly is an all-time great! Alfredo's inks look great to me! Great blog BTW. I think everything is,well...GREAT!

    One reason that these characters can't seem to connect with modern readers is that they don't have creators like this, who can actually produce consistently fun work that has a unique "look" to it.

    The Zabu rendition is a little weak but that Tylosaurus is firing on all cylinders. We'd like a super high-res scan of that to make a poster! Off to the back issue bins we go...

    I had this book as a kid;brought back good memories. Even back then you knew Alcala was not your average inker. Nice work!

    We just got a hard copy of this book and it is even more awesome to behold this minor masterpiece in the flesh... or in print, that is. Another golden nugget from the Groovy One!
