The Boys from Derby: "Last of Its Kind" by Cuti and Staton

E-Man. Mike Mauser. Sci-fi. Fantasy. Romance. Horror. You name it, and Ol' Groove's fave Boys from Derby could deliver! From Midnight Tales #1 (September 1972) here's "Last of Its Kind" by Nick Cuti and Joe Staton. Oh, yeah!!

  1. My friend got to meet the great Joe Staton last weekend in Kansas City. Even got a pic with him! I so wish I could have gone. He even got to meet with some cat named Right Son, or Wrightson, or somebody... ;-) I really NEED to go to one of these things and shakes these guys' hands for all the joy they've given.

  2. Whattatrip - I haven't seen this story since I was a young boy! I only recall it in seeing today's post!
The storytelling, atmosphere and build-up to the final panel made such a profound impression in my young mind, especially pages 4, 5, and 6.
Thanks for the great post, Groove!

  3. ONe more thing: the killing of Murphy is a bit odd with the panel borders blocking off the sound effects and death-shout

  4. Love this story. It's rendered by Staton in his early softer style, and those have a whimsy his later stuff somewhat eschews.

    Thanks for the story.
