Amazed by Aparo: "The Fastest Gun in De Wast" by O'Neil and Aparo

Saddle up, Side-winders! It's time Wander down the ol' dusty trail again for another chapter in the greatest sci-fi/western series ever produced by Denny O'Neil (under the pen name of Sergius O'Shaugnessey) and Jim Aparo! From Cheyenne Kid #70 (October 1968) here comes..."The Fastest Gun in De Wast"!

    I don't know much about Jim Aparo's work before his time spent on B&B, so it's interesting to see this and compare it to what he'd be doing within a couple of years. It's recognisably Aparo, of course, but the inking style is much simpler/more cartoony, and the figures are much more static - certainly lacking the drama of his coming work. I wonder how much Neal Adams' style influenced Aparo when he came to draw Batman.

    The more of these stories you post, the more I want a nice collection of them - either the entire set of Wander stories, even the later ones not drawn by Aparo, or just the Aparo-drawn stories included in some kind of "Charlton Visionaries - Jim Aparo" volume (I kind of prefer this option).

    I have the O'Neil (O'Shaughnessy)/Aparo "Wander" comics in a box right in front of the Infantino/Aragones/O'Neil/Cardy "Bat Lash" comics. Seems sort of appropriate, don't you think?
