Making a Splash: Faves from Giant-Size Marvel

What it is, Groove-ophiles! Few Groovy Age mags were more exciting than Marvel's short-lived, fifty cent, sixty-eight page Giant Size line of 1974-75. We got a variety of writers and artists working on our favorite characters, we got extra-long epics that sometimes tied in to the regular monthly mags, and we even got the debut of some team of mutants that got kinda popular. Another thing we could count on with the Giant-Size line was an array of sensational splash pages. Here are a few of Ol' Groove's fave for your pleasure...

    All I can say those mags want me to go back to the 70's!! My Golden Age!! Marvel just had a army of top talent in their bullpen. All they need at that point was Kirby back! Then he did come back!I remember buying most of these mags like it was yesterday! Especially GS X-Men #1 & the Defenders! I truly became a Dave Cockrum junkie that summer!

    Bronze age Marvel aways had a most excellent vibe going on, and these splashes certainly prove it. I really miss those days, and Dave Cockrum was a personal favorite of mine. "The King" also hit a nice groove with the stuff he created after rebounding to the House of Ideas. His "Madbomb" storyline in Captain America might have gotten most of the attention back in the day, but his work on Black Panther, The Eternals, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Machine Man, and even Devil Dinosaur were tons of fun.

    WOW... Kane,Ploog,Buckler,Starlin,Cockrum,Gulacy! Marvel had an all-star line-up of illustrators in the 70's. It's no wonder these Giant-Size editions go for so much money these days.The seventies were a great time to be a comic reader.

    all of the comics above are favorites of mine - i remember them all very well - the Cockrum Avengers was one of my all time favorites - when i think of Hawkeye i always see that splash by Cockrum!

    That angle on Spidey is awesome! It doesn't look like Andru's typical work (though I loved his Spidey). Is that due to Milgrom?

    Dave Cockrum might be my favorite of all time - and his Hawkeye splash is my favorite splash page of all time - i can remember to this day buying that issue like it was yesterday!
