Ol' Groove's Request Line: "Planet of the Apes" Part 1 by Moench, Tuska, and Esposito
Greetings, Groove-ophiles! From the old Request Line, here's the color kick-off to Marvel's Adventures on the Planet of the Apes #1 (July 1975, reprinting the first chapter of the movie adaptation from the b&w Planet of the Apes #1, July 1974). Over on our FaceBook page, Groove-ophile Eric J. suggested more love for George Tuska, best known for his work on Iron Man and Luke Cage. Mr. Tuska was a Marvel mainstay throughout the Groovy Age, working on Giant-Size Defenders, Champions, Man-Wolf, and tons more. He also moonlighted at DC where he did a lot of mystery and romance, and even a few Teen Titans, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Superman/Batman team-ups (in World's Finest). His strong, singular style was always welcome to my eyes, 'cause I knew Mr. Tuska would deliver excellent storytelling, powerful action, and easily recognizable characters. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteEven though I was never a big Tuska fan. I did learn to appreciate the man's art. He did have his own unique style. I loved everything Planet of the Apes! Especially Marvel's B & W series. Mainly the Ploog & Trimpe issues & all those stunning painted covers.

I came across a copy of the original novel. Given all the "reboots", I wonder why no one ever thought to make a movie that followed the novel more closely. I found the ending much more interesting. If you've never read it, give a try.
