Season's Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Today we kick off 12 Days of Christmas 2012 with an all-time fave, "Night Prowler!" from House of Mystery #191 (January1971). At around the same time writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson were pooling their talents on the creation of Swamp Thing, they knocked out this three-page charmer that played upon those hopes and fears the carolers are always singing about. Young Groove first took notice of this Christmas classic when it was reprinted in the second tabloid-sized Christmas with the Super-Heroes (Limited Collectors' Edition #C43, November 1975), and I've read it most every Christmas since. Enjoy!
Hey Groovy One!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this, I either never saw it. Or I just forot it, with all the gazillions comics I've read since 1968!! It must have been Superman delievering gifts huh? LOL
Thanks, Groove! My first time reading this, but it hit the spot!
ReplyDeleteThank you ... just a little bit of hope!
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that the 12 days of Christmas go from Christmas to Epiphany, right? Just checking . . .
ReplyDeleteYeah, but 12 Days "to" Christmas just doesn't sound nearly as poetic, William--hence my well-meaning mangling of the traditional phrase (okay, and tradition, too. Ya know Ol' Groove never does anything the "normal" way! ;D
DeleteHey, as long as you keep slingin' the cool comics our way, you can have an many days to, from, into and out of Christmas as you want!
DeleteThis was Berni's first story for DC after his return from a brief stay at Marvel, drawing covers and stories for CHAMBER OF DARKNESS, TOWER OF SHADOWS, and CREATURES ON THE LOOSE. At Marvel he was coerced to use bolder brushwork, and he did so fabulously. Gone were the brittle, scratchy (hard-to-print) lines of his 1968-1970 DC comics stories. Beginning with this one, his DC mystery mag stories had a much better look. He had finally hit stride, and his best comics stories were over the next five years following.
