Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Ol' Groove is stuck on a sword and sorcery kick. In the mood for a little Fritz Leiber/Denny O'Neil/Howard Chaykin style s&s, dig? Can't do much better than Sword of Sorcrey #3's (April 1973) "Betrayal!" It's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser in action on the sea, on land, in the air, on land again--hoo-hah! Plus you can have a lot of fun (and spend a lot of time) playing "identify the inker", since Humble Howie employed a ton of 'em: Sal Amendola, Vincente Alcazar, Walt Simonson, Alan Weiss, Bernie Wrightson, Mike Kaluta...do I see a hint of Jim Starlin? Or is that Al Milgrom? Or both? The fun never ends, baby. Check it out!!
I wish the inks had been a bit more consistent in this story, especially on the last two pages. Nevertheless, I loved this series, and O'Neil & Chaykin were in great form---if only it had lasted more than five issues! But I have them all. I also enjoyed Jeff Jones' painted covers on the Leiber paperbacks which came out around the same time. The early '70s were my absolute favourite time in comics.
