Black and White Wednesday: "The Chan Barbarians" by Ernie Chan
Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Ernie Chan, one of the main inkers on Conan the Barbarian, one of the chief artists on Savage Sword of Conan and the Conan newspaper strip of the late 70s, created six smashing double-page spreads featuring Robert E. Howard's finest (plus one)--and Marvel was smart enough to publish 'em in Savage Sword of Conan #52 (April 1980)! And you, you lucky Groove-ophile, get to plant yer peepers on 'em right now!
Love Chan's work on Savage Sword, both as penciler and inker. And these spreads are beautiful. I like the first one in particular, it could have easily been used as the cover for one of the paperbacks.
ReplyDeleteErnie Chan was the master (along with Big John Buscema) at rendering our favourite Cimmerian barbarian! I liked the fourth one with a large closeup of Conan's face along with his lovely comrades!

Though he didn't mention "After Chuan", I admit Silvestri added to the quality and the strengh of the original.
One of the greatest. Though drawn in a much simpler style than in his masterworks on Conan, Chan's Batman shall always be MY Batman.
