Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Today we're gonna glom onto the final ish of the first Hawk and The Dove series from Groovy Age DC! When Hawk and The Dove #6 rolled around in April 1969, Gil Kane had taken over the writing as well as the penciling chores (with inks provided by John Celardo). Our battling brothers definitely went out in style, didn't they?
Kane was on fire creatively during the late 60's, writing much of his own material and reaching for the peak emotional situation to dramatize. Captain Action, Undersea Agent, Hawk and Dove, His Name is Savage, Blackmark, Raven...all came out during this period. Can anyone pinpoint the moment when his art changed from a relatively stately gracefulness to this high-octane emotional melodrama that was so captivating? I know at some point, he decided to ink his own work, and that may have had something to do with it? But what was the tipping point?
