The Boys from Derby: "The Last Monster Hunter!" by Carlson and Zeck
It's your lucky week, Groove-ophiles! Yet another awesome art job, an early one, by mighty Mike Zeck--that's two in one week, oh, yaz! Check out this cool sci-fi/werewolf tale by written by Mark Carlson from Monster Hunters #5 (January 1976)!
Interesting early Zech, it seems he was taking his cues from Marvel's Werewolf By Night in his depiction of the werewolf, even down to the green pants!
That was one of two stories I wrote for Charlton, breaking into comics for the briefest career ever just months before Charlton ceased publication for a number of years. I loved Mike Zeck's artwork and was lucky enough to have him draw both of my stories. In the flashbacks, I tried to link my story to Marvel's Tom of Dracula, substituting Rochelle Van Helsing for Rachel van Helsing and referencing Adam Van Helsing and Vampirella, though not by name in the next panel. I go by Mark Carlson-Ghost now and still dabble in the history of comic books, having recently had an article on Ace Comics published in Alter Ego. It's really nice seeing this up on the net! Mark
Thanks for dropping by, Mark! It's great hearing from you, and thank you for the extra info on your part. I really dug your work--wish there'd been a lot more! Anytime you'd like to do a guest-post about your short-but-sweet career, please come by and lay it on us!
