Dig it, Groove-ophiles! We're back with the third chapter of Doug Moench and Mike Ploog's original POTA serial from Planet of the Apes #3 (September 1974)! "Trapped between killer apes and mutant monsters, Jason and Alexander come face-to-face with the secret of the Forbidden Zone!" (That's how the contents page summed it up!) Inks by Frank Chiarmonte, cover by Bob Larkin!
Superb!
ReplyDeletePlanet of the Apes was IT for a lloonnggg time! Until Star Wars came out in 77. Every kid went Ape Shit for the Apes. From movies, comics, models, the mego figures, halloween masks! I wish I had owned stock in PotA's & Star Wars! These covers were always beautifully painted! Ploog's run on this series were the best!
ReplyDeleteYou have brought back many happy memories....
ReplyDeleteHonestly, the Jason and Alexander Apes saga is simply Marvel's finest black and white serial.
After the Jason & Alexander saga ran its course, Tom Sutton drew one of the weirdest series ever, set entirely on some massive ship-city -- the Future History Chronicles. Now there's something that needs to see the light of day again!
ReplyDeleteIf you're taking votes, I agree with Dave on the Sutton stories. Moench was an idea dynamo during this period, and Sutton did some of the best halftone work Marvel ever published.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Chiaramonte wasn't Ploog ' s best inker they still looked great in beautiful black and white. Later on things got even better when PotA started shooting the series directly from Mike Ploog ' s pencils.
