Black and White Wednesday: "Tigers In a Mind-Cage!" by Mantlo, Perez, and McLeod

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! A lot of you have been asking about Sons of the Tiger! Well, if you want background on 'em, go here. If you want to see them at their best, then you've come to the right place, baby! For the first few issues of Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, The Sons of the Tiger were a group of kung-fu experts fighting bad-guys. With the arrival of the writer/artist team of Bill Mantlo (ROM, Micronauts) and George Perez (every super-team ever, pretty much), the Sons began to find their rhythm, their purpose...and even got a bit...cosmic! Here's the very first SotT strip by Mantlo and Perez (with inks by Bob McLeod) from Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #7 (November 1974), here is "Tigers In a Mind-Cage!"

    Neal Adams actually DID ink a lot of things in this job. It was one of my first inking jobs, and Neal graciously helped me out on the deadline, inking some of the large heads and other things. I'll leave it to you to puzzle out what exactly, but the large heads in the bottom two panels of the prologue are all Neal, for example.

      Ah, thank you so much for the information, Bob! Man, I remember the first time I noticed your work (over Sal Buscema in Defenders #24)--I was totally blown away. You had things in common with Giordano, Adams, and Janson, but also Palmer and a vibe totally your own. Which makes me wonder...why haven't I done a Bob McLeod post?
