"Our Pal" Sal: "Kill! Cried the Raven!" by Thomas, Buscema, and Esposito

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! Here's another example of early Sal Buscema from Sub-Mariner #26 (March 1970)! Of course, he has a cool story to illustrate as writer Roy Thomas brings back Timely's winged warrior Red Raven! Roy's love for Golden Age characters knows no bounds--but he doesn't hesitate to put those old characters through the ringer when a good story calls for it! Oh, and while the credits say "Joe Guadioso", the inks are by Mike Esposito, who was moonlighting from DC with Marvel. Are you ready to dive (ouch) into..."Kill! Cried the Raven!"? Here we go!

Is it just me, or does this page look like Ross Andru's handiwork?

  1. I agree- that one page does look like Andru penciled or did layouts.....

  2. Now that you've pointed it out, I actually see Marie Severin on that page.(Especially check out that running figure in the last panel.) Weird, but I think she was on staff and doing corrections around this time. Maybe Thomas thought the original version was unclear or needed some additional story point and had it changed in the office.

  3. This issue occurred during the brief period where Marvel was forgoing their continued stories in favor of stand alone issues. While somewhat cramping the expansive storytelling that had become Marvel's trademark by then, Roy Thomas was such a great writer that he was still able to tell a compelling tale in 20 pages. Aided, of course, immensely by the dynamic artwork of our Pal Sal Buscema.
