Black and White Wednesday: "One Autumn at Arkham" by Tom Sutton
HoooooowwOOOOOOOO's it hanging, Groove-ophiles! Today we're gonna dig on the genius of Tom Sutton in stunning black and white! From Creepy #64 (cover-dated August 1974) prepare for..."One Autumn at Arkham"!
Grim as this Lovecraftian tale is, it's always heartening to see an artist allowed to do what he loves. I hope that Dark Horse gets around to doing a Sutton Warren omnibus. He was clearly in his glory on the stories he wrote for himself and came up with some stunning narrative techniques for black and white horror comics. And seemed to be having fun while doing it.
Tom Sutton was all over the map stylistically, from a Wally Wood pastiche to a very traditional approach for DC'S Star Trek. I like the delicate line work he employed at his latter work for Warren (like this story) and the work he did for Charlton right before they went all reprint. You could tell he was having a ball at Charlton as he admitted the low page rate was offset by the freedom they gave him to do pretty much what he wanted.
