The Grooviest Covers of All Time: Marvelous December Debuts

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Last Friday we looked back at dauntless DC mags/characters that made their debuts during Groovy Age Decembers, so Ol' Groove thought it might be cool to do the same for Marvel's December debuts! Marvel didn't hit us with nearly as many frosty firsts as DC, but what we did get was pretty cool, don'tcha think?

    In my young mind, I never understood how the X-Men beast ended up grey and hairy... 40 years later I decided to get the Marvel Masterworks in which the above issue was printed. My life was complete.

    Hey - who drew the MTU #1 cover? Still one of my favorite comics. I always remember Sandman escaping down the sink and "leaving a few grains of sand behind" and then recalling an earlier Sandman story (in the FF?) in which "if only one grain of sand could be captured, it would stop the Sandman." My 12 - year-old mind was a ball of confusion, to say the least.

    I always thought it was Sinnott inks, too, but according GCD, it's Frank Giacoia on the inks.

    Greetings. Gil Kane did the first 3 covers above. But why does MTU#1 look sooooo different than the other two? Is that purely due to the inker?
