Greetings, Groove-ophiles! How 'bout some Conan by Roy Thomas and John Buscema? Yeah, and not just any Conan, but Conan the Comic Strip! Back in 1978, the Robert E. Howard Estate, Register and Tribune Syndicate, and Marvel Comics got it all together to put Conan the Barbarian in what should have been one of the most natural environments of all for our fave pulp barbarian--the funny pages! Of course, Roy and John were the best possible choices to bring Conan and company to daily strip life, as you're about to see! Whaddya say we dig on the first seven weeks of that sensational strip, in color, thanks to their having been reprinted in Marvel Treasury Edition #23 (August 1979)! Crom!
soooooooooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooooooooood
ReplyDeleteOh boy do I remember this! In the Des Moines Register. Between this and the Spider-man strip, it got me, as a kid, picking up the newspaper. There was a Dick Tracy strip in there too, as I recall.

Wow, thanks so much for posting this. I'd only heard of the Conan newspaper strip before, and did not know that some of it was reprinted in a Treasury Edition. Absolutely beautiful...
ReplyDeleteThese are pure works of art, Conan in the 70's and even the 80's was perfection, Conan The Barbarian, Savage Sword and Conan The King/King Conan. John Buscema and Ernie Chan were my favorites to Work on Conan. I wish instead of doing a live action feature (which they just cannot seem to get right) just do a feature length R rated animated flick, hand drawn to resemble Buscema, now THAT would be worth the price of admission!
ReplyDeleteA pity the format meant no splashes or anything like that, but great to see Buscema doing his own inks on Conan. Far too rare an occurrence.

The simplicity, and the clean lines, and the beauty of the figures...Buscema just made it look effortless. The guy was a master.
ReplyDeleteThis is really something.
How long did this strip go on for?
ReplyDeleteTwo years it seems
