If You Blinked You Missed: Dolphin
Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Dolphin, the creation of Jay Scott Pike, made her debut in Showcase #79 (October 1968). For most of the Groovy Age, Dolphin was a bit of an enigma and legend, with her only other Groovy Age appearance being in the awe-inspiring Showcase #100. Of course, after the Groovy Age, she was brought back and most of her mystery (and mystique) was replaced by an origin (which included aliens) and a romance with Aqualad/Tempest. We won't worry about all'a that now, though. Here she is in all her glory, as her creator intended...
I guess one shouldn't be surprised that Dolphin was brought back and lumbered with alien origins and Aqualad romances, but it's a shame really, as I thought her debut worked really well as a one-off story and should have been left that way. Oh well, what do I know?
ReplyDeleteYes, she should've been left alone. That original Showcase issue probably didn't sell that well, but it apparently reached a lot of future comics creators who were understandably haunted by her. Poignant and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHOW many issues and appearance did this run? Debut in October 1968? Was this DC's first attempt at Good Girl art to try to hook those aging teens that were more interested in girls than comic books?
