Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Ol' Groove has travelled across the length and breadth of the Internet (okay, so I went through several pages on Google) to bring you some scintillating Sal Buscema original art.
Avengers! Defenders! Marvel Team-Up! Captain America! The Hulk! Can you dig it?
I knew you could!
Beautiful stuff when seen in the raw. But it's painful to look at that Colletta-inked Defenders page. Looks like he dashed it out over lunch --- vague, unimaginative and scratchy, with no light sources. When compared to the care and craft of everyone else used, it's total hack work.
ReplyDeleteWhich? The only 'Defenders' page that I seen listed here at a glance is credited to John Verpoorten...?
DeletePretty sure Anonymous is referring to the page featuring Dr. Strange and Valkyrie from Marvel Team-Up #35. Being drawn by Sal and featuring those two characters, it does look for all the world like a Defenders page.
DeleteMan Groove, you hit my sweet spot. I started buying comics monthly, as a 10 year old, with Avengers 91! Those next 10 or so issues blew my mind esp fora newbie! Think about it! What a run it was for the Avengers! Sentinels, Skrulls, WWII characters, Sal Buscema, Neal Adams AND a $.25 giant, Barry Smith, Rich Buckler... Thomas and Ellison were writing! Only downers was Mar-vell was no longer in green :( Actually, I think you ought to reprint those covers and suggest is this the most talent-loaded 10-issue run in Marveldom in the 70s?
ReplyDeleteSal still does incredible work! His commissions are awesomely fun and he is an incredible inker! I know! Cause he is my inker! Every time I get pages back I am supremely pleased.
