The Grooviest Covers of All Time: More Comics John Buscema Made Me Buy

Well, Groove-ophiles, for a guy who didn't like drawing super-heroes, Big John Buscema (aided and abetted by a small army of awesome inkers) sure made 'em look far-out! Here are a dozen Marvel-ous covers that cost Young Groove a few allowances--and, may I say, they were worth every penny!

    A lot of fantastic issues in that post, loved the Doc Savage books, why do you suppose Doc Savage, Justice, Inc. And the Shadow didn't last any longer than they did? Even the Doc Savage magazine wasn't around long. I loved the take on the old pulp characters but seems most didn't. What are your thoughts Groove?

      My guess (and that's all it is, a guess) is that those mags had a pretty low priority for Marvel and DC. They didn't catch fire like Conan did (though, honestly, thanks to Roy Thomas' efforts, Conan got a better chance and more time to perform), and DC and Marvel were at different points: DC seemed to be dropping their licensed mags, while Marvel was really getting into them. Had DC not backed out on the B&W Shadow mag, who knows--it could have been a major hit, and that could have helped the (excellent) Doc Savage mag live longer. Again, all speculation on my part. I loved Those three particular mags--still do!

    You tapped the main vein of my nostalgia with this batch. Big John is my favorite artist all-time (Joe Staton wins for living and breathing) and this muscular stuff he did when he first stepped in to fill the shoes of Jack Kirby is among his most potent.
