Black and White Wednesday: "The Testing of Blackmark" by Goodwin and Kane

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! From Savage Sword of Conan #3 (October 1974), here's chapter three of "The Testing of Blackmark" written by Archie Goodwin and (natch!) created and drawn by Gil Kane!

  1. I always am amazed how well Gil Kane not only knows anatomy, but perspective as well twisting and utilizing them both to create dynamic scenes. And his inks were in a period where he still still used brush and pen so the material just looks that much better.

  4. Marvel's black and whites always offered so much bang for the buck, as this backup proves.

  5. Marvel had to reformat these for the magazine page. Dark Horse reprinted the whole thing several years ago and reconstructed the original paperback pages at a trade size. It's a mighty tribute to a great comic book artist who liked to push the envelope. Like Kirby and Wood, Kane was scouting out new approaches and markets. Grand stuff!
