Marvel-ous Mondays: "Rampage!" by Conway, Smith, and Giacoia

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! We're back with another Ka-Zar adventure astonishingly illustrated by Barry (Windsor-) Smith, with inks by Frank Giacoia. Gerry Conway's script for "Rampage!" ain't too shabby either, with cool REH-esque villains and lots of action. Top it off with a cool cover by John Buscema and John Verpoorten (even if Ka-Zar is relegated to the tiny bottom section of it), and you'll see that fifteen cents for Astonishing Tales #5 (January 1971) was money well spent!

    At the risk of repeating myself, it's a shock and shame that this material has never (to my knowledge) been reprinted. Ka-zar's saga deserves it.

      It's only been reprinted in the Marvel Masterworks series, as far as I can tell. The 80s and 90s series are in tpb, though. Still, it seems weird that the AT series has been "forgotten"...I mean, it only had art by Jack Kirby, Barry (Windsor-) Smith, Gil Kane...

    Although Giacoia was the wrong inker for Mr. (Windsor-) Smith's delicate line-work the artwork is still beautiful.

    Good point Gents. The art is exceptional and as a youngster I definitely made a point to buy the ATs off the spinner racks.

    Marvellous piece,tightly plotted,having good characterization,depth and sensitivity,and ozzing with mystery and mysticism.A classic of the 1970s.

    Barry Smith's art is bold and finely detailed.It's difficult to imagine anybody else having handled this.He was the prefect artist for the script.
