The Grooviest Covers of All Time: June 1977

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! In June 1977, Teen Groove completed eighth grade and was just a couple months away from starting high school. The best part of that sitch? Graduation money, baby! Look what I spent most of it on:

What did I get with the rest? This n' that, but the most memorable things are comicbook related--but of course!

  1. Holy funeral house, Batman! I forgot that the caped crusader managed to be dead in two separate covers at the same time, for two different sorylines that did not cross over at all ('Tec and Batman could have as well taken place in different universes, in those years).

In Italy the Batman murder trial was printed right after the end of the "new Batman" story, so I initially thought the two were somehow connected. Today, the Batman in that JLA issue would be Hugo Strange, unbeknownst to his team-mates, which could have been neat, actually.

  2. Ah! So many great issues and I still have most of the DC ones. The 5-Star Spectacular is one of my favorite covers Neal did. And KISS! Interestingly, I just bought the Superman book on Free Comic Book Day for $5. Now, I just need the Batman one. Weird Heroes? I don't know that book? Do you still have it?

    1. Weird Heroes was a series of paperback books written by comicbook and sci-fi writers with illustrations by comicbook and sci-fi artists. My all time favorite book series. Yes, I still have them all and am working on scanning the interior art for future posts, but in the meantime, Michael R. Brown at The Pulp Super-Fan has done a great overview of the series here: http://www.thepulp.net/pulpsuperfan/2013/05/22/weird-heroes-the-original-new-pulp/

    2. Hope Groove doesn't mind me putting a link in the comments, but I wrote a little summary of the Weird Heroes series at the now defunct Bronze Age Babies a few years ago. You might find that useful as well, S.D.

Otherwise, looooooooooove this post. Brought back many memories. I was a bit younger than you, but I still picked up a few of these at the time. I remember loving the 5-star Spectacular in particular, and that issue of PPSSM, featuring the second part of his confrontation with White Tiger, was the first issue of that series that I bought. It also made me a fan of White Tiger (even if he is shown kicking my beloved Spidey's butt on the cover).

    3. I knew I'd read another great article on WH, Edo! Thanks for sharing that link (and for the great read!)

Yeah, that 5SSS Dollar Comic is way up on my list of all time faves, too. Though I enjoyed most of those mags up there, it, the Kiss mag, and that Swamp Thing reprint remain strong on my faves list to this very day.

  3. I must have come into money that month, too, because I had a slew of those! I remember being excited at seeing Neal Adams back for so many covers around this time. Thanks for the memories!

  4. So, uh...on that House of Mystery cover, did some guy get, like, eaten by an octopus and take it over mentally, or something?
I need some closure on this.

    Concerned and perplexed,
    M.P.

    2. I had 15 of those books myself! Nova was my favorite character at that time. I was loving the Kraft?/Giffen Defenders at this time. I wanna say that the Captain Marvel book featured sweet inks my Terry Austin but I could be mistaken - the issue with Nitro was inked by him for sure.

That Adams cover for 5-Star Super Hero Spectacular is a favorite. Mr Miracle: And I could never resist Marshall Rogers! All this and John Byrne on Champions! A great month!

  5. It's pretty cool that in 1977 you could grab a brand new comic off of the stands with an Alex Schomburg cover. I have that Invaders Annual as well, stashed safely with the rest of the series.
