What it is, Groove-ophiles! We're back with part two of E. Nelson Bridwell, Don Newton, and Frank Chiarmonte's SHAZAM/Monster Society of Evil epic! This time, Mr. Atom and Kull team up to battle the good Captain Marvel! From World's Finest #265 (July 1980) it's..."The Plot Against the Human Race!"
My heavens! Don Newton's take on the Marvel Family was just absolutely ideal for the time and successfully blended Bronze Age tastes with the pure charm which defined the series in its heyday.

I have this issue! I never bought "World's Finest" as a kid but I've since picked up a handful of issues from 1979-80. I routinely enthuse over Don Newton's art here and in his extended, glorious run on Batman (during the Conway and [first] Moench era).
ReplyDeleteDon Newton is responsible for many of my all-time favorite comics.
I wish DC would collect the Don Newton Cap stories. If the character had been done this way when he was first re-introduced by DC - instead of going with CC Beck's outdated art and Denny O'Neil's stories that showed he never grasped what made the character special - things with the Marvel Family might be much different today
ReplyDeleteI strongly second the anonymous poster who wants a collection of these. I really want to see Newton's entire run on the Marvel Family, including the later stories that were only printed in digest size (Adventure Comics, towards the end of its run, I think). Newton was a rare talent and I was devastated when he passed so early in a great career.
