Greetings, Groove-ophiles! We're back with more cosmic craziness from Arnold Drake, Don Heck, and Vinnie Colletta from
Captain Marvel #9 (October 1968)! With "Between Hammer and Anvil",
Marv is still stuck between battling the
Aakon and the giant robot
Cyberex, but, strategic genius that he is,
Marv soon sets his enemies against one another. This one is pretty action-packed, and pre-super-hero
Carol Danvers gets quite a bit of "screen time" (albeit mostly of the damsel-in-distress variety). Check it out!

CM # 9's cover was an oddity for its day as they usually had the interior artist draw the cover. It made me wistful for Gene Colan's run on the mag. For those who complain about Vince Colletta, he could at least make bad artists such as Don Heck bearable with his inks.
ReplyDeleteDon Heck was absolutely amazing!
ReplyDeleteI agree - Don's art was certainly one of the main foundation stones of MARVEL. Wonderfully atmospheric and dynamic storytelling his characters and comics were always a 'treat' for my eyes no matter who inked him - lol even if it was Vinnie.
