Happy birthday Jazzy John Romita! Where would we Groovy Age fans be without this phenomenal artist and his art direction at Marvel during the 1970s? Would
Punisher, Wolverine, Luke Cage, the
Savage Sub-Mariner, or
Kingpin or so many other heroes and villains have looked as cool? Would the "Marvel House Style" been as glitzy and glamorous? Would Marvel's covers grabbed us nearly as much? Glad we don't have to find out, huh? Let's celebrate John Ring-a-Ding Romita's 88th birthday with a look back at some cool covers and sensational splashes that he created to take our dimes, nickels, and quarters! Thanks for all the great art and memories, O Jazzy One!

You said it. Glamour is the word to describe what John Romita brought to the Marvel Universe. He made all the heroes handsome and the all the women lovely, an idealized world of handsome folks. Compared to Steve Ditko's more humble realistic world it was a total change in tone.
ReplyDeleteRip Off
John Romita. One of the always greats of Marvel. He left an indelible mark on the Silver and Bronze Ages. 88? A youngster compared to Stan the Man at 95. Let's hope he has many more years to enjoy his retirement.
ReplyDeleteThat stuff is exquisite. You can never go wrong with John Romita. His composition is impeccable, and I must concur he did bring a glamour to Marvel Comics.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if it's important, since Romita superbly-inked both of these, but...
ReplyDeleteRon Wilson penciled the Power Man cover.
Don Heck penciled the Daredevil/Black Widow cover.
I gave credit to Heck, but Wilson slipped by. I'll amend it right away. Thanks, Britt!
DeleteI thought that Daredevil cover looked like Heck, but was taking Groove's word for it.
DeleteGroove's words were right under the cover "Pencils by Don Heck" before I ever posted it, lol. I messed up on the Powerman cover, but that one was captioned from the get-go.
