The Grooviest Covers of All Time: The Black Panther Prowls the Marvel Universe
Can you dig it, Groove-ophiles! Today's the day The Black Panther's solo flick hits screens around the U.S. and Ol' Groove is soooo looking forward to seeing it! While we're passing time until showtime, though, whaddya say we dig on a truckload of Ol' Groove's fave Groovy Age covers featuring the Black Panther? Not just covers from Prince T'Challa's own series, but from all over the Marvel Universe? That'll allow us to get to se the Panther envisioned not only by Jack Kirby and Rich Buckler, but also the Brothers Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Byrne, George Perez, Frank Miller, Jim Starlin, Gil Kane and so many more. Sounds like a plan, huh? Then let's prowl!
Great covers. I wish they had settled permanently on the black uniform for the Panther instead of shifting him back and forth between blue and black. Like most readers during the Groovy Age I loved the McGregor run in Jungle Action.
ReplyDeleteI've always had a sentimental spot for the Panther. While I'd already seen a few issues of the Avengers here and there, I began seriously as a comic book collector with Avengers #52 which debuted the Panther as a member and introduced the Grim Reaper to boot. The Panther rumbled around trying to find footing in the MU. Some of it seem a bit forced, such as the attempt to make him a teacher, but with Panther's Rage he became a legit solo star.
ReplyDeleteRip Off
I dig those Kirby covers.
ReplyDeleteGroovy! I just purchased Avengers 73 and now that I've found out its part one of a story I have to go look for #74! Lol I'm going to try to do that and read so I can see the movie Monday.
ReplyDeleteYou will be glad you did. It is the beginning of the Buscema/Palmer run, which goes for almost a year.

ReplyDeletePeople made this film up to be the best marvel film of all time, some of the cgi in this film was ATROCIOUS, sound track was mixed and horrible, and the concept of the film was over all stupid.
"so like we have this resource called vibranium, it never runs out and it fuels our entire society"
it wasn't worth going to the theater to see african tribal people spear fighting over popcorn. The only reason it has 2 stars is because it had a connection to the rest of the marvel universe which is well established, and filmography wasn't bad. but of course filmography is good, its a MARVEL movie
