Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Back during the early 70s, Marie Severin designed many a cool cover for Mighty Marvel, some of them downright iconic. Yeah, some were eventually drawn by the likes of the Brothers Buscema, Neal Adams, and Jack Kirby, some she drew herself, but all of 'em are pretty far-out. Enjoy this behind-the-scenes treasure trove, baby!
great stuff, I really miss the word balloons on covers.
ReplyDeleteBoy I didn't. I felt like they distracted from the artwork. From what I understand they were in response to softening sales in the early 70s.
DeleteMarie's a lovely lady, sweet, funny and super talented, unsung hero at Marvel during the silver & bronze ages.
ReplyDeleteShe was one of those behind the scenes wunderkinds who shaped so much of what we enjoyed.
DeleteDude that was awesome!
ReplyDeleteI actually preferred her sketches to most of the finished pieces.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea she did this kind of work for the company. Thanks for posting these!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, William. Her version of the Doc Doom/Red Skull fight is so much more dynamic it hurts.
ReplyDeleteShe was an integral part of the Marvel Universe, and we're all richer for having seen her work.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Now we know!
ReplyDeleteThe cover designs are amazing. I Love to watch these covers and also save for my collections. I Love to watch Marvel Superhero movies.
