Marvel-ous Monday: "Beast-Killer!" by Kirby and Royer
Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Spinning off from our fabulous 1500th post (one of the top posts of all time here on DotGK, by the way), here, finally, is the first standard-comic issue of Jack Kirby's mind-staggering 2001: A Space Odyssey (September 1976)! This slice of sparkling sci-fi is inked by Mike Royer, natch. Buckle in and get ready to blast off as we meet..."Beast-Killer!"
NASA has been talking about landing ships on asteroids for years, but as we've seen here, that would a mistake.
ReplyDeleteThere's things living in those asteroids that are hungry and have tentacles.
We get enough of that on Earth.
Also, Kosmic Kirby! Need I say more?

I was always confused by this adaptation, not exactly your typical comic book material and to come out at such a later date than the movie I just never understood why.
ReplyDeleteI think originally it was supposed to be a tabloid adaptation of the movie, which came out first, then was added to the schedule to fulfill Kirby's contract for a set number of pages per month. Unfortunately, the series became a formulaic meandering for the always writing challenged Kirby and didn't last too long. Still the art was always up to superlative standards of one of the greatest talents of all time.
