Marvel-ous Monday: "Enter: The Headmen!" by Gerber, S. Buscema, and Trapini

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Yeah, Ol' Groove knows that he wasn't fooling anyone with last Monday's post, but it was fun to write. Here, today, is the comic you knew was coming...the comic in which Steve Gerber really started to make the Defenders his own...Defenders #21 (December 1974) and "Enter: The Headmen!" This weirdo trio of baddies made life pretty rough on our favorite non-team for quite some time...and it all started right here (with art by Sals Buscema and Trapini)!

    You are so right, Groove. This issue marked the beginning of Gerber's quirky chronicling of our favorite non-team. From here on out all sorts of unconventional storytelling would issue forth from the fertile brain of Mr. G. wedded to the stalwart pencilling of Sal Buscema. The headmen were, to quote the Addams Family, "creepy and spooky, mysteriously ookie" and great foes for the Defenders. Only in 70s Marvel could we have enjoyed such tales (and Mr. Gerber was also dazzling us on Man-Thing and Howard the Duck at the same time). And that Kane/Janson cover. Wowee!
