Those Groovy Saturday Mornings: The Return of Birdman and Young Samson

More Saturday morning magnificence from Hanna-Barbera Super TV Heroes #3 (cover dated October 1968). Get down with Birdman in "The Solar Scorpions" and Young Samson and Goliath in "The Cosmic Werewolf"! (Hey, where's my Quake cereal?)

  1. A post including both Birdman and Quake cereal just blows my mind. It's like you have a direct line to my innermost psyche! The only way it could be more eerie would be if you threw in a reference to Super President as well. I guess it's lucky he never made any comic book appearances, though that didn't stop me from looking for one…

(I couldn't even begin to explain how difficult it was to wrap my head around the concept of that change in Quake's appearance. I mean, it's practically postmodern metacommentary on itself, isn't it?)

    Supremely groovy as always, sir.

  2. Sweetness! Birdman is one of my favorite retro toons ever (although I must say, I'm a little more partial to the Galaxy Trio, to be totally honest).

  3. Always happy to give my fans the Bird--Man!

And you wouldn't believe how much Quake's transformation scarred Li'l Groove! But then again, I guess RAB would!

  4. I know, right? A burly miner jumps into a machine that pummels and mangles him beyond recognition, and he emerges as a cape-wearing Australian cowboy? What were we supposed to make of that?

(On the other hand, the commercials by the crew behind Rocky and Bullwinkle are still fun to watch today…even if I can't escape the sneaking suspicion the odds were rigged against Quake from the start.)
