Tuesday Two-Fer: "The Husker" by Potter and Grandenetti and "In the Two Faces of Death" by Skeates and Suydam

Yes, Groove-ophiles, summertime could be a spooky time during the Groovy Age. Just check out these sweaty screamers from House of Mystery #261 (July 1978) to see what I mean...

  1. By 1978 I had given up on DC Comics since the printing had been switched from metal to plastic plates, causing all intricate linework to disappear (so artists like Wrightson, Redondo, Alcala, etc. either had to simplify their work - or to leave). Only the covers were legible at that point. And the page count had shrunk to 17 pages. And prices escalated from 30, 40, 50, 60, & 75 cents within a very short space of time.

Arthur Suydam did his first HOUSE OF MYSTERY story in 1973 (at age 18, I've been told), and he was very much the poor man's Berni Wrightson at that time, before evolving into a Frazetta clone of sorts.

  2. I absolutely adore Jerry Grandinetti's work but am I the only one who prefers to see his work in heavy, contrasty black and white?
