Groove's Faves: "The Beast's Revenge" by Albano and Kaluta
Greetings, Groove-ophiles! We're in the Dog Days of Summer, so why not howl a little! This classic shocker, "The Beast's Revenge" first turned up in the dog-eared pages of House of Mystery #200 (January 1972). Story by John Albano. Art by Mike Kaluta (who also did the cover and the intro page). You can bet this tale is no dog!

ReplyDeleteMan I really dug DC's great ghost & horror comics of the early to mid 70's. Bernie Wrightson & Mike Kaluta blew me away. Wrightson's Swampthing Kaluta's The Shadow! Have you posted those two House of mystery novels? By Wrightson & Jack Oleck? From 1972 & 73?
Those tales were super creepy. Wrightson's illustrations were as usual macbre masterpieces! I'd love to see you post the covers. To those Bantam Doc Savage & The avenger here. Neal Adam's Tarzan covers & Steranko's The Shadow also! I'd love to see a different banner too. Still love to see you do a 75th anniversary for Superman too. With that Superman portfolio & link to youtube. With Meco's Superman the movie themes. Keep on Truck'in Groovy One!
Nice Kaluta cover, but this is one of the rare occasions - because DC's early '70s covers usually had great colour choices - where the hues and intensities thereof actually fight for attention. Nothing is subordinated. Do we look at the shadowy figures in the moon first, or the lit window, or the group of animals at the left? Everything shouts 'look at me' and the result is confusion. I doubt it's Kaluta's fault, as the original art looks fine. It's the colouring.
