Our Pal Sal: "No Way to Treat a Lady" by Claremont, S. Buscema, and Leialoha

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! A mere month before Marvel started the main storyline that would become the legendary "Pegasus Project" saga, Chris Claremont, Sal Buscema (Our pal!), and Steve Leialoha got it all together to create a four-part saga for Marvel Team-Up that was pretty doggoned far-out! Part one, "No Way to Treat a Lady" (from MTU #82, March 1979) teams the ever-amazing Spider-Man with an amnesiac Black Widow as they go up against...Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.?!?  Don't Sal and Steve make an incredible art combo?

Keep your eyes peeled for later chapters, baby, 'cause it gets even better with more S.H.I.E.L.D. and even Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu joining the party!

  1. Oh, yeah - my favorite ever multi-part story in Marvel Team-up. In fact, it's almost my favorite MTU story in general (just barely edged out by the Red Sonja team-up in #79, which is my favorite single issue of the series). This is such a well-done tale by Claremont - it builds up nicely, there's some really nice character moments throughout, and it comes to a satisfying conclusion. And yes, that Sal/Leialoha art combo is stunning. I can't praise this one enough...

  2. I have to echo Edo's sentiments. One of my absolute all-time favorite Marvel epics, with art that is nothing short of revolutionary. Loved everything about this one. It was like watching a big budget action movie. They really knew how to tell an exciting story back then. Thanks for posting it Groove. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

  3. The Buscema/Leialoha art team looked amazing for this 4 part story arc. I don't know why they never teamed up again.

  4. Wow... I am struck by the number of panels. Seems like "a lot?" Also, no inker was listed. Does this suggest the artists inked themselves? Thanks.

    1. Sal did the basic pencils (layouts/breakdowns) while Steve did the finished penciling and inking.
