Making a Splash: Jim Aparo's Batman Wasn't Only Brave and Bold

What it is, Groove-ophiles! There's no doubt that the great Jim Aparo is high on most everyone's list of greatest Groovy Age Batman artists, based solely on his long and far-out run on Brave and the Bold. However, there were a few occasions on which Mr. Aparo was allowed to strut his penciling stuff on some solo Bat-tales. Not a lot, but enough to make you want more (which we finally got in the 1980s). Wanna see the splashes for 'em? Yeah, I thought you might! Well, heeeEEEAR they are!

Two with Archie Goodwin in Detective Comics #'s 437-438 (July-Sept 1973)...

...Three with Len Wein, also from 'Tec #'s 444-446 (September 1974-January 1975)...

...And one from Batman Family #17 (January 1978) with Gerry Conway! (Okay, so it's not technically a solo tale--but really, would you have wanted Ol' Groove to have left this one out?)
Didn't think so!

  1. As always, thanks for posting these great Aparo splash pages. The Batman Family one has always been one of my favorites.

  2. Awesome. I'd really love to see DC put together some Jim Aparo Batman collections. He's my all time favorite Batman artist and other than the black and white Showcase Presents books, I'm not aware of any color trades.

  3. I agree Groovy one! Jim Aparo's art rocked, his Batman was gritty & cool. I just wish he had gotten to do Capt.Marvel much more. I wish we could had gotten a few issues of the B & B with Batman & Capt. Marvel. I also would had loved to see him do Capt.A, Ironman & the Hulk.
