What it is, Groove-ophiles! Well, what it should be is "Ol' Groove Catches Up Week", 'cause here I is playing catch-up for the third day in a row. On September 10, 2010, Ol' Groove posted "Making a Splash: The Avengers by George Perez Part 2" and joked at the end of the post that I hoped I wouldn't "...let another year slip, slip, slip away before round three!" Ouch. Here, in all it's tardy glory, are the final stack of splashes representing Gorgeous George Perez's Groovy Age Avengers run (issues 194-196 [January-March 1980], 198-202 [May-September 1980]). As you can tell by the dates, I've even included a few from the "Gilded Age" that followed the Groovy Age so as not to break up the set. After this t'was au revior, Avengers (until the 1990s), 'cause George was heading over to DC to team with Marv Wolfman on some mag featuring the JLA's side-kicks...
Wow, thanks for posting these, they bring back so many wonderful comic-book reading memories. The 180s (with most of the art by Byrne) and 190s plus 201 & 202 (with most of the art by Perez) are my personal favorite issues of the Avengers. It's too bad that creepy there's that creepy story in ish 200, because otherwise I'd consider one of the best runs of that title ever.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff! Perez is a master, but I have to say that dinosaur is pretty lame. It looks like a giant salamander! Sheesh!
ReplyDeleteRip Off
The Vision's dialogue in that last page made me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteThese are great layouts--I especially love the shattering glass effect. I think the dino is great too--there's no reason to restrict the artist from having some creative license. It's not the freaking Natural History Museum!!
ReplyDeletePerez can do no wrong in my book. His Avengers run is classic! So much fun to read, even after all these years.Always liked Perez's take on the Beast,Pym,Hellcat,Whizzer & Capt.America...
ReplyDeleteGreat memories. As a boy, I cherished all my Avengers issues - especially the Geo. Perez books.
ReplyDeleteMy only quibble is the off-center Wasp/pure white floor/weird tilted angle on the Terrible Toll of the Taskmaster splash. But these are all classics! Thanks, GA!
