Weird Worlds Week! Black and White Wednesday: "The Dream Temple of Kandu-Ra!" by Conway, J. Buscema, and the Crusty Bunkers
We're still rollin' like stones with Weird Worlds Week, Groove-ophiles! Today we're hitch-hiking to the Savage Land to keep up with the Lord of the Hidden Jungle, himself, Ka-Zar! "The Dream Temple of Kandu-Ra!" comes courtesy the combined talents of Gerry Conway, John Buscema, and the Crusty Bunkers (and yeah, that includes Neal Adams on the Ka-Zar figures) from Savage Tales #7 (September 1974). Let's go!
Well, if we can't have Buscema inking Buscema on Conan/Ka-Zar, then by all means give us Adams & friends. Being such an exceptional penciller himself, I was always pleasantly surprised by the restraint that Adams showed when inking others people's work. The few Conan stories that he inked - whether pencilled by Buscema or Gil Kane - are among my favourites. The ink washes on the pages above is a nice touch. Would I be right in thinking that Adams would have applied that himself?
ReplyDeleteSavage Tales certainly lived up to its name. Without the Comic Code ,Ka-Zar was able to go "ape" in these stories...he left quite a body count! Oh yeah,the art is nice too!
