Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Today Ol' Groove is skimming the top of the list for Ye Olde Request Line, with another request from Groove-ophile (and artist par-excellence) Jim Sanders III. Jim is a big-time fan of the late, great Dave Cockrum (aren't we all?), so his request and good taste has led us to Delightful Dave's final outing on the Legion of Super-Heroes! From Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #202 (February 1974) and written by Cary Bates, can you dig..."The Wrath of the Devil-Fish!"?
That was one of my favorite LSH issues.....a 100 pager with two new stories in it, plus a section on each of the Legionnaires and their powers. I just loved Cockrum's art. I hated to see him leave after this issue, but Mike Grell was a more than satisfactory replacement. Just glad Cockrum landed on his feet elsewhere after this. :)
ReplyDeleteI can dig it! The first appearance of my Light Lass costume AND a nice part for that delicious Mmmon-El... when he could squeeze Kal out of the darned spotlight he always hogged.
ReplyDeleteMay I say that the Light Lass design was one of the very best of the LSH re-designs? I loved the way it was similar-yet-different from her brother's uniform!
DeleteI wonder what the reaction would be if, at the next staff meeting, I said "from now on, I want to be called Wildfire!"?
ReplyDeleteI dunno, but if your name is "Erg-1" the reaction would have to be positive! ;D
DeleteYou have a point. : )
DeleteGroove, Please keep the Cockrum LSH posts coming until you run out stories. They were my childhood favorite on the 70's spinner rack. Grell LSH wasn't too bad a replacement.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see how Cockrum's Timber Wolf (for DC) predated Cockrum's Wolverine (for Marvel) in appearance.
