Random Reads: "Spawn of the Devil!" by Jones and Grandenetti

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! How does a publisher get a rip-off (which I actually like better'n the original) of The Exorcist into a Comics Code-approved comicbook? Ol' Groove doesn't know, either, but Atlas/Seaboard did it in Tales of Evil #1 (December 1974)! Here are Russ Jones and Jerry Grandenetti with "Spawn of the Devil!"

Black and White Wednesday: Direct Currents for the Summer of 1976

Check it out, Groove-ophiles! If you remember the Summer of 1976, you're bound to have some great memories--Ol' Groove sure does! Here's a chance to re-live some of those "gold old days" from the summer of the U.S.'s Bi-Centennial via the Direct Previews section of Amazing World of DC Comics #12! To make it even more special, this particular edition of Direct Previews announces the arrival of new DC publisher Jenette Kahn (along with the major editorial changes), aaaand a preview of the original cover of Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali--by Joe Kubert!?! All this and a sneak-peek at September 1976, too!

Groove's Faves: "Masks" by Moench, Zeck, and Tartaglione

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Mike Zeck fans, rejoice! Today we're gonna check out a rare and totally far-out Hulk outing by the incredible Mr. Z. from The Hulk! #16 (June 1979)! "Masks" is a pretty cool little morality play written by the amazing Doug Moench. It's an action-packed epic involving a search for treasure in a sunken Spanish galleon, which takes Lettuce Lips from New Orleans to the Florida swamps, and along the way pits our gamma-irradiated hero against a unique mad scientist, an alligator, a manta, and even a mutated octopus! Inked by John Tartaglione and colored (in Super Marvelcolor!) by Steve Oliff, 'tis definitely one of the best issues of Ol' Jade Jaws' full-color magazine!
