Black and White Wednesday: "The Quaking Horror" by Fox and Auraleon

What's happening, Groove-ophiles! Time to dig back into the dingy vault of spooky stuff for a real chiller of a tale. Today's fear-fest is the Lovecraftian "The Quaking Horror" from Creepy #65 (cover dated September 1974--reprinted from Creepy #42--Auraleon's Warren debut!), written by Golden Age great Gardner (Flash, Hawkman) Fox and Spanish sensation Auraleon (Rafael Aura Leon, Vampirella mainstay). This one's got it all, baby! Demonic creatures, spooky cellars, cursed books, torch-carrying mobs, and a chick named Flossie! You know you're into something far-out when there's a chick named Flossie in a story, dig? Take it away, Uncle Creepy!

Making a Splash: George Perez's Inhumans

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Time to take another look at the spectacular splash pages of George Perez (accent on the first "e", natch)! This time, let's gape in awe at Mr. Perez's work on The Inhumans. Starting around 1975, George somehow became the go-to guy when Marvel needed a penciler for a super-team. The Inhumans, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Sons of the Tiger all enjoyed Perez's pulse-pounding pencils and --for a time in 1976--he worked on 'em simultaneously! What's really cool about this batch of splashes is how, no matter how many different inkers Marvel turned loose on those Perez pencils (can ya get much more diverse than Frank Chiaramonte, Fred Kida, Mike Esposito, Vinnie Colletta, and Don Perlin?) you can still see his style shining through. Check 'em out, baby, from Inhumans #'s 1-4 and 8 (July 1975-January 1976 and September 1976)!

Groove's Faves: "Freak Show Murders" by O'Neil and Kaluta

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Let's start our workweek off right with a classic Denny O'Neil/Mike Kaluta Shadow spectacular, "Freak Show Murders" from The Shadow #2 (September 1973). O'Neil and Kaluta knocked this creepy tale outta the park, man! Circus sideshow freaks, murder, mystery, action, suspense, and of course, the coolest hero to ever Know What Lurks In the Hearts of Men. 'Tis the stuff of groovy comics, baby, and here it is all for you!

Sunday Funnies: "Tarz An' the Apes!"

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Would'ja believe that about a half-decade before getting the writing-reins of Marvel's version of Tarzan, Roy Thomas did this twisted parody of our beloved jungle hero for Marvel's Spoof comic. Only a writer who knows and loves all things Edgar Rice Burroughs could skewer the Lord of the Jungle so perfectly. Of course it didn't hoit that Roy was backed by the superior art-team of the Siblings Severin (Marie and John). It's a bit dated, and certainly non-PC, but still lots'a fun. By now you know Ol' Groove's rappin' about "Tarz An' the Apes!" from Spoof #2 (August 1972), and heERE it is!
